Otter is the kitten found crying on the rocks at Creek Street.  He is   10-weeks old and a well adjusted live wire.  Loves to play and enjoys the silly games dreamed up by the small child in his foster home.

Introducing Freya. She is about eleven weeks old. She is mild-mannered, polite, a good little hiker, rides well in the car. She is both cat and dog friendly, and is coming along very well on her potty training.

This is our Scooter. Isn't he handsome? He's two years old and a little over twenty pounds, so he's sturdy and portable. Scooter is a Sheltie mix. His foster family says it is going to be very hard to give him up because he's loyal, affectionate, playful, and smart. He knows basic commands, is house trained, leash trained, has good car manners, and has great recall. Scooter needs a fenced yard and would love another dog as a companion. He bonds very well to people, and would likely do best with someone who is not gone all day, although if he had another dog as a companion, he'd get along fine. Scooter ignores cats, but he is very focused on birds, and if not contained by a fence, he'd chase a raven or crow all the way to Seattle.

Glitter is the sister to Sparkle and just as sweet and silly!

Pyewacket is a beautiful young semi-longhaired black kitten with green and yellow eyes. This boy is a purring machine, very affectionate. He is fostered with a large dog and other cats. He can be visited in the kitty condo at Island to Island Veterinary Clinic on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Tad is a four month old semi-long hair gray male cat.  Tad is Mr. Confident Kitten, a big change from the frightened and timid kitten he was when he came into rescue. He is fostered with other cats and a large dog. He's very affectionate and playful. He's a gorgeous silver-grey, with the softest coat.

We are welcoming beautiful Cinder Ella to the Ketchikan Humane Society. Cinder is a French Bulldog puppy, less than a year old. She was very loved in her original home and it was very hard for her family to give her up, but allergies are no respecter of loving ties. Cinder Ella likes people of all ages. She is good with other dogs and with cats. Like a lot of Frenchies, Cinder has some allergy issues of her own which will require daily medication and a special diet. Potential adopters must be willing and financially able to provide for her medical needs. She's worth every penny! Cinder Ella will be available for adoption after she has been spayed.

Franz gets his name because he looks a little like one of the Saturday Night Live characters in the Hans and Franz sketches. He's sort of a Muscle Beach dog. Franzie is a neutered mixed-breed, about five or six years old. There's some Chihuahua, and three people who saw him today on his walk thought maybe some Corgi. Franz is very timid, but he is warming up quickly in his foster home. He is learning that strangers have treats and kind hands. If you're interested in meeting Franz, please fill out an application.

Raspberry is a young Llhasa Apso. She is timid around new people, but bonds quickly once she feels confident. Raspberry will be available for adoption after she's been spayed.

I am a nice boy, a pure-bred poodle about nine years old, and already neutered. I like grass, I like other dogs, I like older children, I like to walk on a leash, I like to snuggle.  I'm looking for a second chance at a forever home.

This is one of Henry's babes. They are getting stronger and are starting to try to climb out of their basket now. It's driving Henry crazy. Keeping five tiny kittens corralled is like herding fruit bats, but Henry's hanging in there. Look at those beautiful markings!

These kittens were abandoned in POW when they were just over a week old.  They have been doing well so far and if they survive they will be up for adoption in about a month after they are altered.  They are pictured here with surrogate parent 'Henry' who they have adopted.  What a great dad!

Sneakers is a 12-week old male orange kitten with white feet. He is outgoing and likes a lot of attention.

Miss Sara is an adult English Cocker. She bonds easily to people and wants to be your best friend. She is so people-oriented that she doesn't get on well with other dogs in the same house, although she interacts well with them elsewhere. She needs to be an only pet. She'll reward you with so much love.

Brogen is a 10-week old male orange kitten with very pretty markings. He is extremely social and talkative and needs an owner who likes to cuddle and share their everything with their cat.

Spud is eight weeks old. He was trapped as a feral and had never been around people, but he is warming up darn quick! He now loves to have his belly and ears rubbed, and when you pick him up, he instantly snuggles into your neck and purrs. Spud will be available for adoption after he's neutered.

Bali Moon is a gorgeous kitten. KHS kittens can be seen in the Kitty Condo in the lobby at Island to Island. Bali Moon and his brother Panama Red are looking for their forever homes.

Storm is a 10-week old dilute tortie female kitten. Her color is stunning - grey with peach-colored patches. She is a curious and friendly kitten who prefers to seek you out when she's ready to play.

Pacer McPacerton of the McPacerton McPacertons of Beverly Hills and Palm Beach, is a young Spaniel/Peke mix. He's probably about two years old. Pacer is so full of energy. He'd make a great agility dog. Pacer loves children to the moon and back, and would be happiest playing every day with a bunch of little kids who would throw a ball or small Frisbee and wear him out. Pacer is not housebroken yet. His goal in life is to sprinkle every vertical surface and a few horizontal ones, but he is responding very well to training. He just never knew before that the world prefers that dogs piddle outside. He will be neutered soon and then available for adoption. This is an A+ little dog.

Cat Ballou is a 10-week old female kitten. She is a little shy at first but warms up. quickly. She likes to explore and play pranks on Storm.

Panama Red, is shy right now and gets nervous around a lot of people and pets. Both Panama Red and his sister Bali Moon are being fostered with other cats and with large dogs.  Panama Red is a pale cream and sherbet color.

Charlie is a very sweet and distinguished gentleman.  He would love a home to spend his retirement in - giving and receiving love and attention.  He is a 12-year old cuddlebug.

Hank is an adult Llewellin Setter. The Llewellin is a strain of the English/Gordon/Irish Setters. Hank is the most gentle and loving dog we've had in a long time. He's good with everyone, whether they have two feet or four. Hank needs to be neutered before he can be placed for adoption, and he also came to us very thin and lethargic, so he is being medically evaluated. We don't adopt out animals with unresolved medical problems, but when Hank's medical screening is complete, we'll let you know what's up with him.

Hank will need a home where he can spend his remaining years in comfort. Not everyone is interested in the older animals---people like puppies and kittens---but the senior pets are so rewarding to adopt. They repay your compassion with so much love, and you have the blessing of knowing that your kindness made an animal's Golden Years as peaceful and easy as they could be, and that's worth so much.

Pierre is still waiting for his forever home. He is a five year old Papillion mix. He bonds quickly to those who are kind to him. He would do best as an only dog, who would be the focus of his owner's attention. He knows basic commands and loves to snuggle, but he's also a great little walking companion.

Alfalfa is a young, chunky male kitten with long hair and lots of personality.  He is not as agile or persistent as the other kittens but loves to play with everything around him and purs at the touch of a hand.

Chowder is a young female kitten who likes to play hard but is the first in the litter to curl up in her foster mom's lap for a cuddle.

Maestro is a young female kitten with a little spit and vinegar mixed with a need for human affection.  She is always following her foster mom and nibbling on her watch, her iPad or her elbow.  Maestro is very confident and outgoing.

Bert (sibling to Tonka, Ernie and Taz) is a friendly male kitten who is extremely social and outgoing.  He is extremely patient with young children and loves to snuggle.

Tonka (sibling to Bert, Ernie and Taz) is a round, sturdy kitten who loves to follow the action around the house.  He is extremely outgoing and social. 

Ernie and Taz are siblings to Bert and Tonka.  They are social, friendly outgoing kittens who love attention from everyone.  Taz is the only female of the group.  Her foster family has nick-named her 'Dora' because she immediately checks out everything new to her environment.

Shenzi is a small-mixed-breed dog - She is currently recovering from a non-contagious skin problem but that hasn't dampened her spirit.  She loves to fetch and play and likes a lot of attention.

Mozart is a 3.5 month old male Siamese mix.  He is very sweet and lively.   After his neuter he was hanging from his kennel door yelling to the staff for immediate attention of any kind.  He is ready for a home.

Brownie is a small breed puppy.

Cookie is a small mixed-breed puppy. He looks a little bit like someone took sandpaper to his eyebrows, but that's because he is recovering from a skin infection. He was one of the puppies taken from the hoarding situation discovered in Ketchikan in October. Cookie loves other dogs. He's a little shy around people. He is crate trained and is learning about house training, and learning basic commands. Cookie needs an adoptive home in Ketchikan.

Luna is as black as a cat can be.  She is so beautiful and sleek, outgoing and affectionate.

Garnet is a fluffy male kitten. He was found sick, cold, and alone as a tiny baby. He's now a healthy, happy purr machine

The Badge: Badger is getting much better about meeting strangers. He bonds quickly and easily once he is familiar with you. Badger does not like bigger dogs, although he does fine with dogs his size. He is kind of a bully with cats. He rides well in the car and would be a perfect companion. Badger is very fearful of being groomed, but his coat requires daily brushing. If you take it slowly, you can brush a little bit at a time and he tolerates it pretty well. He wants to be an only dog. He is not fond of cats. He HATES being groomed, but still must be regularly brushed to keep mats from forming. This is Bixby. He's nine months old. He's a Llhasa/Shih Tsu mix. Bixby was not socialized as a young puppy so he is in training so that he is not afraid of strangers, but he'll soon be ready for a loving home. He would do best with older children.

Fonzi is a sweet mild-mannered 9-month old boxer. He is friendly with anyone he meets (men, women, and children.)  He has done very well with the other dogs in his foster and he is quickly learning proper boundaries (not jumping on them). He is hoping to find a home where he can be taken for runs or walks and car rides. He would love to stay next to you as much as possible because he has discovered that he really enjoys cuddles and being told how good of a boy he is. He is potty trained and already knows basic commands (sit, stay, come, lie down). Did I mention that he is exceptionally handsome? 

Penelope is not quite four months old. She's an All-American mix. She's Dachshund, MinPin, Terrier, and Lab! Penny has the personality of a Lab, and the size of the small breeds. She loves kids, other dogs, kittens, and big folk. She is so gorgeous. Her pictures don't do her justice. Everyone who meets her says how beautifully conformed she is.

Buttons is a year old. He's a Lhasa mix. He weighs about twelve pounds. He loves to play fetch, go for walks, and has completed four agility classes. Buttons needs a home where his owners are committed to socializing him. He should meet lots of new people, go lots of places, have lot of new experiences to build his confidence. He loves to ride in the car, he loves other dogs, does not seem to mind cats, and eats everything that's put in front of him. He will not do well if left alone for long periods of time. This is Havana. She's a two and half year old purebred Belgian Malinois. She was found running in a field in California, thin, hungry, and scared. She was sent to a rescue in Washington state and came to Ketchikan as a possible Search and Rescue dog. She ended up with us because she has a condition which keeps her from metabolizing sodium correctly, so she can't spend long hours as a working dog. She is a big sweetie and we love her. She needs to be a companion dog and needs to be on a low-sodium diet, but those foods are easily available here, so that's not a problem for a prospective adopter. She is good in a kennel, is crate-trained, and likes older kids. She likes younger ones, too, but she might be a little too enthusiastic for them. Havana needs a great home with people who will keep her forever. She's had enough sadness in her young life. 

Zena is a husky mix. Isn't she the most gorgeous thing? Her foster family says she has a great personality. Zena likes other dogs well enough, so long as they don't take her toys. If they try, she quickly puts them in their place. She is very toy-motivated. She even prefers toys to treats, and will sit or lie down on command for a toy. She is completely housetrained. Zena might do better as an only dog. She bonds quickly to people. She would be best with older children. She has not been tested with cats. She's been spayed and is available for adoption.

Right Smudge is a female kitten.

Butterscotch is a young mixed breed who looks something like a Golden Retriever, although she's only thirteen pounds and is likely fully grown. She's a Golden-Wanna-Be. She's not quite a year old. She bonds very quickly with people. She sleeps all night in her crate, has never had an accident in her foster home, and gets along well with other dogs. She's learning to walk nicely on a leash and jump into and out of a car on command. Butterscotch likes children. She has not been tested with cats. She'll be available for adoption after she's spayed.

We can't figure out why this wonderful boy keeps getting overlooked. We love him so much, and want a great home for him. He's stolen our hearts in the time he's been with us. He's just a great All-American dog. He's small, so he's easily portable. He's sturdy, so he's not fragile. He likes people. He gets along well with other dogs. He is only four years old. He has great house manners. Titan would be a wonderful dog for any home with older children, or with a single person or couple. He is a little shy at first, but he takes almost no time at all to snuggle in, soak up the petting, and start to love you.

This is Nana. She's fifteen years old. Someone dumped her at the animal shelter. She was so sad and so arthritic, but she was taken in by the KHS and placed with a wonderful family. With good nutrition, glucosamine supplements, and daily pain meds, she has a new lease on life. Look at her rolling in the grass! This is one lucky girl to have been rescued from a shelter at her age, and to have found a home where she will be loved and cared for until the end of her days.

Bashful is about eleven weeks old. He is a Lab mix. We don't know what he and his brothers and sisters were mixed with, but they are all going to be big, strong dogs. Bashful doesn't fit his name any more. He's outgoing, happy, loves to hike and play in the water, and would be an excellent companion for a busy single, couple, or family. He likes cats, kittens, other dogs, and children.

Miss Maybell is an six year old female Miniature Schnauzer. She's a very nice girl, with good manners. She has been fostered with other dogs. Maybell wants a forever home where she can be someone's steady companion.

Otto is a white and brown wirehaired dachshund. He has great car manners and is kennel trained. He likes older children, but is fearful around toddlers and young children, and therefore should not be homed with anyone who has small children around. He loves every adult he's met and begs for tummy rubs. He is a little couch potato who is happiest snuggled in a lap. His foster family says he's a gem.

Snimm is a beautiful and sleek young female cat. She's quite friendly!  Snimm has grown used to be exploring outside and needs to be an indoor/outdoor cat so she will do best in a home that's far from the highway.

Meet Pumpkin a Schnauzer mix. Pumpkin is Spice's sister. These girls may be homed together or separately. They have always been together, but they are confident enough that they'll do fine if they end up in separate homes. Pumpkin is three and a little bit shy but gets along well with other dogs and is house trained.

Meet Miss Halo! And she is a special, beautiful girl and we hope you'll help us to help her find her forever home. She is only 6 pounds (look carefully, she is small) and a 10-year old senior. When she arrived, she was a mere 4.5 pounds. 

Halo is a house dog and glad to be one. It seems she was born without any eyes. She gets around just fine, however, and enjoys all of the same things as the other dogs do. However, she prefers to be pampered and spoiled silly. She likes to ride in baskets and soft carriers and would love it if she was able to go to work with you and sit quietly at your feet at your desk. She is able to sleep all night long and sleeps best if she can sleep with you in your bed. She can also do a little puppy dance. Halo should not be homed with small children because she is small and can not see. Adults only for this beautiful lady, please!

Here are Haystack and Harvest, the two newest KHS rescues, who had their pictures taken today at their first veterinary appointment. Harvest is the fluffier one, a sweet little girl with a very happy ending. She wags her whole body. Haystack, her brother, is just as nice, with a more wiry coat. They are both terrier mixes, about five months old. They will be available for adoption after they are altered.

This boy is twenty-two pounds of love and snuggles. Van Gogh is an All-American mixed breed. He's small enough to be portable and large enough to go walking or to the beach with his family. He is a little shy at first around strangers, but once he feels comfortable, he warms up quickly. Van Gogh needs regular brushing to keep his beautiful collie-like coat smooth and shiny. He likes other dogs and plays well with them. He's good in the car and in the house, and walks well on a leash. He's a nice boy.

Meet Spice a Schnauzer mix. Spice is two years old and more outgoing. They both get along well with other dogs and are house trained.

Lucy is bird watching from the comfort of a box. Lucy is a super lovebug. She is Chiquita's sister. Both these girls are sweet and have been baby tested!

This is Suzie.   She is an affectionate and sweet girl who gets long well with kids and other dogs.  She about five or six years old, high-energy and lives for affection from her human companions.  Her foster home says she is a smart and sensitive soul who needs gentle corrections.   She knows basic commands and is seeking a forever home that will welcome her into their family.

Meet Basil. He is about 12 weeks old. Not only very handsome but outgoing and friendly.

Moonrise is a beautiful 12 week old Siamese mix. This lovable boy will be available after he is neutered.

Fiona spent several days in a trap before she was rescued. It took her a couple of months to trust people, but her foster home kept her socialized and made her confident. She lives with five dogs of all sizes, and other cats, so she does not mind other animals in the home. Fiona is young, just over a year, and would be happy cuddled up next to you, or snoozing in a blanket somewhere when you're not home. She had such a sad beginning that we all want a very happy ending for her.

Sadie was born at the end of September and is a female Shepard mix.  She is a smart puppy who already knows sit, stay and down!  She is being fostered with cats, large dogs and a toddler.

Olaf is three weeks old. He looks more and more like he might be a Lab/Newfoundland mix. He is going to be quite large.

She has a heart condition that is treatable medicinally.

She would like nothing more that a pair of feet to follow around, a warm place to sit,and gentle hands to take care of her in her golden years.

Lo-lo is being treated for a skin condition. She is a 6 month old pug mix.  Lo-lo working on house training and other puppy skills.She is an easy going puppy that will blossom with the right family.  KHS is accepting applications for Lo-lo.

Archie is a six year old long-haired dachshund.  He loves other dogs, car rides and a warm, cozy place to sleep.  He had a rough start and has some special needs but will make a great companion as he loves to cuddle.  Archie will not be placed in a home with young children.

Cocotoo is a sweet Shi Tzu who needs a home without small children.  She will be available for adoption after she is spayed.

New Moon is is a male kitten who is super sweet and cuddly having been fostered with young children. He was born at the beginning of April.

Susie is a 14 1/2 year old female Lab/Chesapeake mix. She will do best in a house without stairs or a cat.

Hal is a six week old male kitten.

This is Chase. He is a young mixed-breed. He looks like he has a Chip of Chihuahua, a Dollop of Dachshund, a Portion of Pug, and a Trace of Terrier. He is housebroken, crate trained, loves people, loves other dogs, walks well on a leash, but believes cats have no place on the planet. He loves to make them run! Chase is available for adoption. You can fill out an application on line, or you can stop by Island to Island Veterinary CLinic on Carlanna Lake Road and fill out a paper application. Chase is not a pocket pet—he’s tall and weighs about 12 pounds. 

This is Cosmos on the right with his brother Rhody. Cosmos has the regular number of toes. He looks like someone dusted him with powdered sugar.

Benson is 13 weeks old, male, and is a Heeler/Border Collie mix. Benson will do best in a home with outdoor containment, as he’s a high-energy puppy with a lust to wander. He needs to be kept busy and well-exercised. He loves people and gets on well with other dogs. He’s not had a lot of experience with cats and would likely chase a cat which runs from him. He is great with older children, but as with many herding breeds, he tends to want to herd smaller ones.
